Four Leadership Lessons I Learned From the Colonoscopy
Some think it’s difficult to make the connection between any surgical treatment and leadership, not to mention a colonoscopy! I realize I’d personally haven’t place the two together until my recent experience.
I heard nearly all of my life how awful a colonoscopy might be. The prep is difficult, the drink you have to take is horrendous, and it is a colonoscopy! Guess what happens? I found it wasn’t so bad after all. Was it the most fun experience I’ve had? No. Was that coffee I had created to drink delicious? Of course not however it wasn’t that bad either.
Yesterday you’ll be able to have only fluids to ‘clear your system’. I personally enjoyed drinking the fluids and enjoyed the broth I ate. I felt energized rather than depleted from the process.
When I arrived for that procedure – the process was seamless. I had been seen within Quarter-hour of arrival and greeted with the staff who have been organized, pleasant and competent. The drugs were as wonderful because i had heard and I awakened in the totally alert state without any grogginess at all.
My husband played minicab driver for me and stayed with me at night all day long to ‘be sure I was ok’, A friend contacted the morning to check on me to find out the way went.
Because i underwent this experience I found some parallel’s to effective leadership today. Call me weird, but here are some leadership lessons I learned coming from a colonoscopy:
Leadership isn’t as Bad even as we Think
We quite often hear it is difficult and demanding becoming a leader today. A lot of people will avoid a leadership position because of what they’ve heard. However, Leadership, like medical procedures, can be pleasant, healing and even fun – what a novel idea – Go figure!
